There can be questions raised such as: “Is there not just one single universal Sign Language that everyone can use?” “Why not, this would be
Did you know that 1 in 12 of your workforces, that’s 1 in 12 of your team or colleagues could either be deaf or have a hearing loss?
Disability covers a wide range of conditions. Deafness is one of the hidden disabilities and 54% of employees with hearing loss are reluctant to tell their employer. Therefore, this highlights the need for employers to commit to disability to ensure they are meeting the needs of all their employees, giving them opportunities to disclose their disability and feel included.
We often underestimate just how important office banter is to the feeling of happiness and inclusion in the workplace. Can you imagine seeing colleagues laughing, but you don’t know why? Without a doubt, you would feel left out and not part of the team.
Often deaf staff can be the last to know what’s going on, whether that be relevant business developments or that a team member is celebrating a birthday that week. Therefore, by being aware of the needs of those around you is a great start to make improvements in your working environment.
The Disability Confident Scheme
The Disability Confident Scheme is in place for companies to look at how they can recruit, retain and develop disabled people. There are 3 levels on this disability confident journey and by ensuring your company is deaf aware, you are taking steps to be inclusive, looking at the needs of your deaf and/or hard of hearing employees which will break down any barriers and allow them to thrive within your business.
