Sense – Support for Individuals with Multi-Sensory Impairments

What does being DeafBlind mean?

Deafblind does not simply mean a deaf person who cannot see or a blind person who cannot hear; it is more complex than that.

Experiencing levels of deafness and blindness together can make life a lot more difficult.

Sense is a team of dedicated volunteers and skilled staff offering flexible services to deafblind people in the UK.

Sense was established in 1955 by a family whose children were infected by rubella. The parents’ experience formed the basis for the organisation, and Sense continued to grow with their children.  Initially, the organisation was called the ‘National Deafblind and Rubella Association’.

The organisation has been offering invaluable services to children and adults who are deafblind.

In order to help children, Sense identifies strengths and then focuses on areas of weakness. Throughout the UK, there are 25 summer camps every for children to help them enjoy their holiday and have fun!

They provide support to the deafblind community enabling them to live as independently as possible.

They provide residential services in England and Northern Ireland. Sense aims to “provide each person with the maximum independence possible along with all the needed support and opportunities to learn and develop”.

The charity also strongly feels that arts can play a significant part in the lives of the deafblind community, believing that art can contribute to their well-being.

Sense also offers training sessions for professionals who want to get involved in their schemes, conducting special conferences and seminars.

In its infancy, Sense was helped by professionals from abroad; today, their services are projected at an international level in order to serve deafblind people from all over the world.

You can become a Sense member. Stay connected with the updates through SURG (Sense Users’ Reference Group), a group of deafblind people and family members who meet regularly.
