Hearing dogs for Deaf People provide training for dogs to alert deaf people to sounds and signals at: work, in public and at home.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, founded by Dr. Bruce Fogle in 1982, have been providing help to the deaf communities for 30 years. During this time they have trained more than 1,700 hearing dogs!

The organisation’s dogs wear burgundy jackets in order to physically represent of their owner’s deafness. For deaf people, a hearing dog’s company can help increase their confidence and can reduce isolation when managing tasks that are necessary in daily life.

Facts about Hearing Dogs for Deaf People:

  • Hearing dogs are provided to deaf people for free
  • The charity is not supported by government funding and rely solely on donations from individuals, companies, and other organisations
  • Each dog is trained specifically to the needs of the deaf person, to whom these dogs have been matched
  • Training of hearing dogs requires a large amount of funding; with costs exceeding £40,000
  • The training of a puppy can take up to 12 to 14 months
  • Hearing Dogs for Deaf People was launched as a charity at the Crufts dog show in 1982
